日本の就活の定番「ガクチカ」って何？書くことがない人はどうする？ What is ‘Gakuchika’ Standard Job Hunting in Japan? What would people do if they have nothing to write about?

留学生の皆さんの中で、日本の会社に応募しようとしてエントリーシートの準備をしている人も多いのではないでしょうか。
日本の会社では、書類にスキルや資格以外の内容も書くことが求められます。
今回は、エントリーシートの頻出ひんしゅつ質問である「ガクチカ」について説明します。

ガクチカとは「学生時代にがんばったこと」 Gakuchika Is ‘What did you do best as a student?’

ガクは「学」、チカは「力」を略した言葉の組み合わせです。
ガクチカとは、「学生時代に力を入れたことは何ですか？」という質問の略です。
まだ企業で成果を出したことのない学生だからこそ問われる質問です。

「力を入れたこと」とあいまいなたずね方をされていることには意味があります。

学校は勉強に行くところなのは当然のことではありますが、日本では人間的な成長のために学校に行くという考え方が根強いのです。

そこで、ガクチカには学術的な成果を書くよりも、学生生活を通した成長を書くように示唆されています。

Gakuchika is a combination of abbreviations of the Japanese Kanji: Gaku is ‘学’ Chika is ‘力.‘
The abbreviations mean ‘What did you do best as a student?’
Companies ask this question because students don’t normally have the experience to achieve results at their company.

The meaning behind the question is to ask whether they have learned enough to achieve results.

In Japan, people have a deeply-rooted belief that students go to school to mature as an individual, even though it is expected of them to go there to study.

This means you need to write how much you’ve grown since as a student before your academic achievements.

企業の大小を問わず、エントリーシートや面接に頻出 ‘Gakuchika’ appeared Frequently in Applications and Interviews Regardless of Company Scale.

ガクチカは、どのような規模の企業でも必ず出題している項目です。
しかも、大手企業ではガクチカを複数書かなければならないケースもあります。

エントリーシートでの指定文字数は、1つを400字程度で書く場合もあれば、複数のエピソードを100～200字ずつ書く場合もあります。

応募する求人の業種・職種に応じてガクチカを使い分けている学生も多くいます。
就職活動を始めるにあたって複数のエピソードを用意しておきましょう。

何らかの分野で全国的に上位になった、有名な大会に出場した、学内のコンテストで表彰された、などが一例です。

企画したイベントの来場者数、SNSのフォロワー数など、数字が明確に出せるものもガクチカに適しています。

To hold recruiter’s interest amongst the enormous number of job applications that are sent to a company, it is advantageous if you have great results that show up in large numbers.

For example,  become nationally ranked in some field, participate in famous competitions, attain awards in a contest, and so on.

It is suitable for Gakuchika to show up as numbers like the number of visitors to your planned events or the number of followers on SNS.

成果を得るために継続的に工夫や努力をしていること Continuous Ingenuity and Effort to Obtain Results

採用担当者は学生がガクチカに書いたことが社会でも再現できるかどうかを評価します。
1つのことに継続して取り組み、成果が出るまで努力したというシナリオが理想的です。

数日でも海外旅行に行くと、他では得られない体験ができるかもしれませんが、会社に入ってからその体験が必ずしも再現できるわけではないため、ガクチカに向いているとは言えません。

イベントについても、参加当日に感動的な体験をしたというだけでは不十分です。
準備や練習の段階から振り返って書くと、ガクチカの良い題材になるでしょう。

The recruiter evaluates Gakuchika in job applications written by students for what they can or cannot reproduce in society.

It is an idealistic scenario that shows efforts to get results.

If you go overseas for a couple of days, perhaps you can attain a good experience you can’t find anywhere else.
However, it is unsuitable for Gakuchika, because it will be hard to reproduce the overseas experience.

Attendance to an event is also not enough, even if you were inspired. Reflecting and writing from the preparation and practice stage can lead to good subject for Gakuchika.

取り組みを通して自分の強みを発見できていることDiscovering Your Strong Points Through Effort

ガクチカは、出来事を作文するだけのものではありません。
結論として、自分の強みをどのように伸ばせたのかを書いてください。

派手な実績を持っていなくても、結論のまとめ方次第で評価が変わります。
苦手だったことや、以前の自分には不可能だったことができるようになったのなら、数字の上では平均的であっても卓越した成果として認められます。

逆に、いくら良い成果であっても偶然の結果に見えてしまったり、理由の説明がつかなかったりすると選考で不利になるので注意しましょう。

Gakuchika is more than just writing about events.
In summary, you should write about how you developed your strengths.

If you don’t have great achievements, you can change the evaluation depending on how you summarize your Gakuchika.
If you are able to do what was impossible for you before, you are accepted as achieving something outstanding, even if the number of achievements is not much.

On the other hand, it can lead to a disadvantage, because it could appear as a coincidental outcome even if it was a great achievement. So please be careful!

学校のゼミやグループワーク School Seminars and Group Work

ガクチカにはまず、学業について書くことがお勧めです。
研究内容そのものを説明するよりも、研究活動を通して伸ばすことができた自分の長所に焦点を置いて書きましょう。

グループで行った研究活動なら、協調性やリーダーシップ、多様な考えの尊重、視野の広がりなどに言及すると良いでしょう。
個人での研究なら、情報分析や課題発見、構想などの問題解決能力、主体性や計画性など課題への向き合い方を挙げてみましょう。

First, writing about schoolwork is recommended for Gakuchika.
You want to write focusing on the strengths you developed through the process of your activities, rather than explaining the activities themselves.

If you did activities as a group, it is better that you refer to such activities as a collaboration, with leadership, and having an open mind for diverse ideas.
If you worked on an individual activity, you can refer to the information analysis you did, the problem-solving you did, and how you took initiative and planned things out.

アルバイトの体験 Part-Time Job Experience

志望の業種、職種と直接関係がなくても、アルバイトやインターンシップの経験はガクチカの効果的な材料です。

ただし、勤勉に働いた、作業ミスが減ったなどでは不十分です。
職場でどんな結果を出せたのか、販売数や順位などの数値、実現した企画、お客様の評価などで明確に示しましょう。

日本の企業は「改善」を好む傾向があります。
上からの指示に従うだけでなく、マニュアルに書かれていないような小さなタスクをより効率的、効果的にできるよう自ら工夫するのです。
研修に行くだけでなく、職場で勉強会を行って情報交換することも奨励されます。
社内の提案制度に応募して企画を出すのも望ましい行動です。

このように、ボトムアップ型の働き方ができたことをガクチカに書くと、高く評価されます。

Having experience with a part-time job or an internship is an effective ingredient for Gakuchika, even if they are not directly related to desired industry and job position.

However, diligence and self-improvement is not enough.
You should clearly show the results achieved at a workplace, such as sales figures, realized plans, and customer evaluations.

Japanese companies tend to prefer to raise the bar.
They not only follow instructions from their superiors, but also devise ways to do small tasks that are not written in the manual more efficiently and effectively.
You not only go to training, but you are encouraged to exchange information at a study meeting in office.
To propose a plan through a suggestion system is an advisable move.

Having done a bottom-up work style is highly evaluated in a Gakuchika.

スポーツチームでの体験 Sport Team Experience

スポーツで培われる体力やメンタルの強さ、集中力、チームワークなどを高く評価してくれる企業が日本にはたくさんあります。

必ずしも、アスリートとしてトップクラスである必要はありません。
ケガやスランプなど逆境に陥ったときにどう乗り越えたかという体験をガクチカの材料にすることもできます。

試合に出た人だけでなく、戦術を分析するスタッフや、選手を支えるマネージャー、応援団なども、それぞれの役割で勝利にどう貢献したかを表現すると良いでしょう。
目標達成に取り組むチームの中で、自分の役割を認識して全力を尽くし、互いに協力し合う経験ができていれば、自信を持ってガクチカに書きましょう。

Many companies in Japan highly evaluate physical strength, mental toughness, concentration, and teamwork that are cultivated through sports.

You don’t necessarily have to be a top-class athlete.
You can also use the experience with overcoming adversity, such as getting stuck with an injury or slump, as an ingredient for Gakuchika.

Not only the players but also the staff on the sidelines as well.  They analyze and come up with tactics, support the players, and cheer for team. Each has its own respective role.

If you recognize your role in a team working to achieve a goal, and did your best to work together, write that for your Gakuchika with confidence.

もしもガクチカに書けることがなかったら？ What if you have nothing to write for Gakuchika?

今から参加できる活動を探す Find an activity you can participate in

必要な単位を取るために、あまりクリエイティブではない大量の課題やテストに追われてガクチカに書けるような経験を積む余裕がなかった人もいるかもしれません。

そんな人も、「勉強が忙しかった」とガクチカの回答を諦めるのではなく、今からできることを探してみてください。

休暇の間だけなど、比較的短期間で取り組めるボランティア活動やイベントもあります。

Some of you may have been very busy with a large number of not-so-creative assignments and tests in order to earn the necessary credits, so busy that you didn’t have the time to gather experience to write in your Gakuchika.

If you are one of these people, please try to find at least something instead of giving up on your answers for Gakuchika.
It’s better than just saying that you were busy studying.

There are volunteer activities and events that you can undertake in a relatively short period of time, such as over a vacation.

自分で企画をして成果をつくり出す人も Some people start up their own plans to get results

参加できそうな活動がない人も、あきらめる必要はありません。

同じように、自己PRできる材料がない人が集まって就活サークルをつくったという事例もあります。

仲間集めをするリーダーはもちろん、参加者それぞれが得意分野の講師を務めて勉強会を開催することで、参加した人全員が就活サークルでの実績をPRして就活に成功することができたそうです。

Some people start up their own plans to get results.
People that have no material to promote themselves would also gather and create job-hunting groups.

Their leader would call comrades to gather, and each participant would hold study sessions and lectures of fields they were best in.

For new graduates to get into Japanese companies, you must answer the question “what did you focus on when you were a student?” for your Gakuchika.

You are requested to write about your growth through your college life rather than your academic results.  You should write how you worked hard in seminars and group work, and your participation in sports teams and clubs.
